Villanelle: “Camelot Beseiged”

Oh you should tremble under night's blue cloak
Who dared to think the ancient powers were weak
That thunder was no pagan hammer stroke.

Now that the Green Knight wears his crown of oak
And all the powers of Earth are at their peak
Oh you should tremble under night's blue cloak

The sleeping knights of Arthur are awoke
By visions of the Grail that they must seek,
That thunder was no pagan hammer stroke.

Above, imagine Angels in the smoke
Contending against Armageddon bleak
Oh you should tremble under night's blue cloak

When whipporwills cry, and toads are all a-croak
We pray with Sir Gawain who yet was meek
That thunder was no pagan hammer stroke.

Now that upon High Camelot, the wreak
has fallen of Le Fay's envy and picque,
Oh you should tremble under night's blue cloak
Who dared to think the ancient powers were weak.
